Owen Daniels, Pro Bowl Backup

Wednesday, January 28th, Owen Daniels was announced as the Pro Bowl backup to AFC tight end Antonio Gates.  Not only is this notable because the Houston Texans now have THREE Pro Bowlers, but also because Daniels is finally getting some recognition for a very solid tight end career.

When I went to the University of Wisconsin in 2005, Daniels was a key component in a Badger offense that heavily featured the tight end screen - partly because Stocco didn't have the greatest arm-strength.  Regardless, anyone who paid attention to the Badgers during Daniels' career knows that he was a great college tight end, not overly spectacular like Gates with his athleticism, but great hands and consistency showed Owen had the potential for bigger and better things.

I wouldn't be surprised if Daniels continues to get better and become a consistent Pro Bowler and one of the best tight ends in the league.  Despite being the laughing-stock of the league for many previous years, the Texans might take the opportunity and let Detroit assume the crown in the next few.  With three players in the Pro Bowl already, Houston is only a few short steps away from winning a playoff game, or even two!
